Cloth snack baggie

A great alternative to plastic baggies, you can use this guy again and again.  Just big enough to hold a healthy size serving but still big enough to fit adult and kiddie hands.

Supplies:
Fabric - lining - 8 X 15 inch rectangle
             outer - 6.5 X 14 inch rectangle
Fusible vinyl - 7.5 X 15 inch rectangle
( I found this at my local Jo-ann with the prepackaged interfacings and such.)
Velcro - 3 inch strip (5/8 or 3/4 widths will both work)
Sewing machine, thread, scissors, straight pins, iron

1.  OK here's the fun part....using fusible vinyl to make your baggie resistant to stains and goopy messes.

Fuse the vinyl to the right side of your lining fabric(my lining fabric is the solid yellow).  Before you actually take the iron to it make sure you read the instructions on your vinyl.  This only takes a couple seconds to fuse.  *Note that I've made the fabric a little bigger than the vinyl so you wont fuse plastic to your ironing board.  Also if you want a little more moisture protection you can add another layer on top of the first.

2.  Trim the excess fabric around the vinyl so you have a 6.5 X 14 inch rectangle with the vinyl attached.

3.  Take your velcro piece and separate the hook(stiff plastic) side from the loop(soft fuzzy) side.  On your vinyl lined fabric place the loop piece, centered, about 3/4 inch in from one of the unfinished short sides.  You want it to orient your velcro piece so that the short sides are perpendicular to the short sides of your fabric rectangle.

Sew in place.

4.  Sew your lining and exterior fabric right sides together, with 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving a space along the side for turning.  Clip the corners and turn right side out.

5.  Fold the edge without velcro attached up 5.5 inches.  Pin in place.

6.  Reattach the hook piece of your velcro to the loop piece that is already sewn to the top flap.  Fold the velcro flap down so that it lays flat on the previous folded piece.  Now curl back the flap just far enough so you can see the edge of your two velcro pieces and mark its location.

Now sew the hook piece of your velcro on at that location.

7.  Last but not least fold your rectangle back up like earlier and top stitch around the whole thing with a 1/4" seam allowance.

Tada! You have a finished snack baggie.

This fabric baggie is a way superior choice to keep from using all those disposable baggies.  To clean it you can either hand wash it or more realistically for the rest of us, wash it on cold/delicate in the washing machine and let it air dry.  DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR CLOTHES DRYER!  This will melt the vinyl and you'll have a nasty mess on your hands.  Now the only question is what to put inside.  Carrots, crackers, maybe even dog treats.

That last one was Sadie's idea if you couldn't have guessed.

Stay tuned for our next tutorial.  We are going to be making reusable sandwich wraps with alot of the same materials.  Eeeee!  I cant wait.

Craft on!
Anita

  8. Great idea, will have to look for the vinyl. I always take a snack along for the ride and use many zip lock bags. Thanks :)

  10. Love the fusible vinyl idea. I have made snack bags using ripstop nylon as a liner, but this makes it water resistant only...stil can get kind of soggy. I then used a plastic sandwich bag cut open sandwiched between the ripstop and the outer fabric...this made it much more waterproof - but it was more work then just using the vinyl. Thanks for sharing.

  25. Just wondering does the Vinyl say anything about use with food? Are you concerned about the plastics and your food?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great tutorial! @Brenda - you can make this in all cloth is BPA is a concern. I've made something similar with canvas and it was still good for food.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There's no info about food safety on the packaging but after a little detective work I can say that there is no BPA or lead in the vinyl. I would also say that Im no more concerned about this product than I am about plastic in any other part of my life. I'd also echo Emma and say if you're really worried then just omit the vinyl and make your baggies out of something like canvas. Thanks for the great points.
